Abel Ferrara ist ein US-amerikanischer Filmemacher. Er ist vor allem für die provokanten und oft kontroversen Inhalte seiner Filme sowie für seine Verwendung und Neudefinition der Neo-Noir-Bildsprache bekannt. Zu seinen bekanntesten Filmen zählen die in New York spielenden, düsteren Krimi-Thriller „The Driller Killer“ (1979), „Die Frau mit der 45er Magnum“ (1981), „King of New York“ (1990), „Bad Lieutenant“ (1992) und „Das Begräbnis“ (1996), die Gewaltverbrechen in urbanen Umgebungen mit spirituellen Anklängen schildern.
Ferrara wirkte außerdem in zahlreichen Genres mit, darunter im Science-Fiction-Remake „Die Körperfresser“ (1993), im Cyberpunk-Thriller „New Rose Hotel“ (1998), im religiösen Drama „Mary“ (2005), in der schwarzen Komödie „Go Go Tales“ (2007) und im Biopic „Pasolini“ (2014).
